The autumn table

A MacKenzie-Childs Thanksgiving table, your way

Three considered ways to mix checks, serving pieces and vintage finds, starting with the pieces already in your cupboard.

Three tables. Start with your own cupboard.

01 · Courtly Check + autumn colourOwner-shared autumn vignette showing black-and-white checks with orange seasonal accents

Let one check lead

Use a checked serving piece as the focal point, plain plates beneath it and rust or ochre napkins. Repeat one autumn colour twice rather than adding a different pattern at every setting.

Use what you own: Move your checked bowl or tray from the kitchen to the table. The photograph shows the colour pairing, not a table setting or items offered for sale.

02 · Mocha + warm neutrals

Texture over more pattern

Layer brown checks with ivory dishes, natural linen and clear glass. Keep the centrepiece low enough for conversation and leave space for serving platters.

Use what you own: A wooden board, cream napkins and a clear vase establish the palette before you buy anything.

03 · Vintage + newOwner-catalogue Buttercup serving platter, an example of mixing vintage florals into a table

A table with a story

Mix one vintage platter or compote with simpler contemporary place settings. Give a decorated rim breathing room; repeat its quietest colour in your linens.

Before serving: Check the piece’s condition and manufacturer care guidance. Use damaged or uncertain vintage pieces for display, not food contact.

01

Plan the table around the meal

Lay out empty serving dishes before adding decorations. Leave room for elbows, hot dishes and passing plates; move tall accents to a sideboard if they obstruct conversation.

Choose one hero piece, then repeat its colour in two quieter places. Mixed collections feel intentional when colour, scale or material provides a connection.

02

Buy for a missing job, not a complete matching set

A platter, pitcher or low serving bowl can do more work than another ornament. Measure your storage space and check care instructions before adding a piece.

If a vintage object has chips, cracks, repairs or uncertain food-use suitability, use it as a decorative accent instead. Ask the seller for a base photo and condition details.

03

Keep the story with the piece

Photograph your finished table and note the patterns you mixed. Share an original photo through the collector-home submission form; submissions are reviewed before appearing publicly.
