The many lives of Courtly Check

A community-built chronology of shapes, finials, backstamps, retirements, and reissues across one enduring pattern.

01

Record the entire object

The check pattern alone rarely dates a piece. Form, hardware, finial, materials, dimensions, labels, and marks create a more useful identification record.

02

Retired does not always mean old

Shapes and colorways can leave and later return to production. Describe an item as retired only when the specific form or edition can be supported by a reliable source.

03

Use careful attribution

When documentation is incomplete, phrases such as ‘believed to be’ or ‘collector-attributed’ are more responsible than presenting an uncertain date as fact.
